1. I have never been to a small studio before, what should I expect?
A small studio is the perfect place to get advanced instruction, personalized attention and get results. Whether you are a beginner, a seasoned athlete or an advanced yogi, a small studio can enhance your practice in many ways.
When you enter the studio, please be courteous, quite and respectful as other students may be practicing. You should remove your shoes in the corridor before entering the main studio space. Our studio instructors and students are very friendly and will welcome you to class. Although we promote personalized training, we strive to promote a strong, community feel at our studio. You should never be intimidated to try something new - we would love to have you join us in class!
2. What if I have never done Yoga before, what class do you recommend?
In general, beginners are welcome in any class, as they are all different and the instructors can teach at all levels. However, the New Beginnings Yoga, Relaxation and Back Care and the Family Yoga class will typically feature very basic postures and cater well to beginners who want to get a basic foundation in Yoga. We will also have Introductory courses for those who would like to attend more formal introductions to the studio and yoga practice. 3. What are the benefits of Yoga?
You can get so many benefits from yoga, and often each posture has a specific associated benefit. Some of the most talked about benefits are flexibility, stress relief and developing a strong mind-body connection. Different styles of yoga can also focus on different benefits, so trying different styles based on your goals is important. Yoga also burns calories, and can promote healthy living in general resulting in a healthier and happier you.
4. What are the benefits of Pilates?
Pilates is a class that focuses on core strength and flexibility. Pilates is well known for helping students develop good posture, eliminating back and neck pain, and promoting body control and balance. Much of our strength comes from our core, and when used effectively, can greatly enhance athletic ability, reverse chronic conditions and improve life on a daily basis. Pilates and yoga are also great compliments to one another, and students who practice both, typically enjoy a faster progression and advancement in their practices.
5. What if I have injuries or chronic pain?
If you are having pain, you will want to check with your physician first before entering any of our classes. You may also want to visit the Rubin Health Centerto get a structural fingerprint exam, which will help you evaluate whether our classes are appropriate. In general, movement activities and specially targeted training, can be very beneficial to easing and even eliminating chronic pain and healing injuries. As always, you will need to be careful and ask for modifications when needed. Our instructors will assist you in making good choices for your body; please make sure to inform them before or during class about any pain or conditions that will affect your practice.
6. What is the connection between the Rubin Health Center and Generations?
Generations and Rubin Health Center are working together to provide much needed services to the community. Both organizations are committed to promoting strong and healthy bodies and minds that can endure the challenges of daily life. Both organizations are equipped with professionals to provide services to those who have not been very active in the past to those who train hard on a daily basis. 7. How do I register online?
Generations uses an online software system, Mindbody Online, which provides excellent and easy to use registration services. Click on this link to start. If you have not logged on before, you will create your own username and password. If you have visited Generations in the past, your client record will likely already be in the system, and you can just update your profile and get started. If you have not been to generations, please complete the client profile and then proceed to registration. Please note that you most classes are discounted when you buy them online. If you are eligible for a discount (student, 55+, government employee or member of the military), you will not be able to access the discount online until you visit the studio and show your ID. After that, you will be able to access the discount online.
The software will also allow you to place requests for personal training, small group classes and massage appointments. Just click on the appointment tab to get started. As long as you have your e-mail address saved in your profile, you will receive an e-mail confirmation. If you would prefer to receive a confirmation via text message, please complete the section of the profile that ask for your mobile provider and telephone number. You will also have the option to save your credit card in a safe and secure environment, and never have to bring your wallet to the studio. We do encourage online and early registration as our class sizes are limited. By registering online and coming to class at least five minutes before the start time, you can guarantee your space in class. If you are not able to attend class after registering, please cancel your registration the day before to allow others to guarantee their space in class.
8. What should I bring to class?
A positive attitude and an open mind - we will take care of the rest! We do encourage everyone to have their own mat, as they are very porous and can capture germs, but we do offer free mats to use if you forget yours. For hot yoga, please bring towels and water; we also rent towels and sell water at the studio.
9. What should I do to prepare for class?
You will want to avoid eating heavy meals or drinking beverages (other than water) within two hours of class. Eating light, healthy snacks and hydrating with water before class are recommended to keep up your energy levels and keep you hydrated. If you are preparing to attend a hot yoga class, drink plenty of water the entire day before class and after class to make sure you stay hydrated. Regarding clothing, you will want to wear something that you feel comfortable in (physically and emotionally) while sitting, standing, moving, laying on the floor and sweating. In general, you will want to avoid restrictive and heavy clothing.
10. How does the class pricing work?
You can purchase each class or session individually or buy a package. We do not offer memberships, and there are no start-up fees or long-term contracts to sign. The more classes you purchase together, the better rate per class. Online prices for classes are also discounted, and new students can buy one class, get one free. We accept cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard and Discover.
11. What if I cannot stay for the entire class?
If you attend class, you should plan to get there on time and stay for the entire class. We generally do not permit students to come late or leave early, as it disrupts other students, and may have detrimental physical effects from missing a key component of the class during the warm up and cool down. Class structure and timing is very important, along with respect for other students, so please only attend when you can stay for the entire class. Exceptions are always made for urgent situations.
If the class times and lengths do not suit your schedule, you can contact us to let us know your interest in additional or different class. We will also have a posting on our bulletin board available for people with special requests. You may also want to try a private or small group lesson to best accommodate your needs.
12. What are the benefits of personal training/private lessons?
These sessions can be an invaluable learning experience as you will have the opportunity to interact with the instructor for the entire class. These sessions can also be developed to address your own specific needs and level of training. This is also a great way to start out and avoid developing bad habits or injuries. All of our instructors are available for private lessons and personal training (Pilates, yoga, dance, strength and cardio training). Find your favorite instructor and book an appointment today.
13. What are the private, small group classes?
These are great opportunities to get more personalized instruction, but share the cost with others. They are also perfect for companies who want to offer their employees a benefit that will give great returns or for groups of friends who want to do something positive for themselves. Class of all varieties can be arranged at various times. We can even bring these classes to you if you have appropriate space. Register online or contact us for more details. You can also place a request on our bulletin board to find out if others are interested in joining you for a small group class.
14. What is a Thai Yoga massage?
Simply wonderful - what more can we say! The client actively participates in this massage, and performs basic stretches while the instructor works on pressure points and gently assists the client increase his/her range of motion. All levels are welcome, and it is helpful to have some knowledge in yoga before trying the massage, but is not necessary.
